- The Surprising Skills Many Kids Are Missing — And How We Can Help
I recently saw a striking piece about today’s students, and it really got me thinking — are we overlooking the basics? According to reports from teachers across the U.S., many kids are arriving in the classroom lacking what used to be considered everyday skills. photo courtesy www.stillwatertherapy.org What’s happening Children as young as first and second grade have told teachers they can’t tie their own shoes. Other reportedly missing skills include peeling their own snacks, unwrapping food, telling time on an analog clock, handling simple tasks like zipping coats or folding clothes, and even writing legibly. Multiple educators say this isn’t just about “kids being kids” — many believe the decline has to do with reduced opportunities to learn independence at home: less hands-on practice, more parental (or adult) help doing chores and basic tasks. Why it matters These “simple” life skills — shoe-tying, packing their own lunch or backpack, tying shoelaces, undoing inside-out sleeves — build independence, confidence, and self-reliance. When children don’t get to practice them, they may struggle with resilience, resourcefulness, or even basic self-care tasks later on. At a time when academic curricula are packed and children are spending more time with devices than with hands-on tasks, we risk raising a generation that’s highly knowledgeable on tests — but potentially lacking foundational life skills. As one teacher put it: “kids are becoming a generation of 35-year-old basement dwellers.” What we can do — as parents, educators, and mentors Make time at home for real-life tasks: shoe-tying, peeling fruits, dressing themselves, packing bags. Encourage kids to try and fail — and try again. Let them struggle a little; let them learn independence. Treat “life skills” as part of education. Not just academic learning, but real-world competence. Talk often with kids about responsibility, ownership, and self-reliance — because confidence and competence go hand in hand. For those of us in education — and especially here at Steele’s Scholars — this is a timely reminder: academic success and real-world confidence grow together. When kids build independence, they become stronger learners in every subject. If you’re ready to give your child both the academic support and confidence-building skills they need, now is the perfect time to start. I offer personalized tutoring packages designed to strengthen learning habits, study skills, independence, and self-reliance — all in a supportive, encouraging environment. 👉 Book a tutoring package with me today and set your child up for success inside and outside the classroom.

- From B to C: Austin ISD Scores Slide as Students Struggle Statewide
Student performance across Texas continues to show troubling declines, underscoring the vital role tutors play in keeping students on track academically. In its latest report, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) revealed that Austin ISD earned a “C” rating for the 2022–23 school year , a drop from the “B” the district received the previous year. These ratings, delayed due to a lawsuit, were released in April 2025 (Texas Education Agency, April 2025). RRISD Having Issues Too Wow— only 43% of RRISD students scored "approaches grade level" or higher on 7th grade math in 2025, down from 51% in 2024, while the state average for 2025 was 52%. The decline mirrors broader statewide challenges. According to Community Impact, only 43% of Texas students met grade-level standards in math in 2023, compared to 50% in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic (Community Impact, 2025) . Experts point to long-standing issues in math education—such as limited teacher training and a lack of early intervention for struggling students—that were only made worse by the pandemic. For families, this data highlights an important truth: while district and state averages decline, consistent tutoring offers students personalized support, accountability, and progress . Tutors help fill instructional gaps, build confidence, and ensure that students aren’t left behind in a system still recovering from years of disruption.
- Texas Bans Cell Phones and Smart Devices in Schools: What It Means for Learning
This month, a new law went into effect that could dramatically change the classroom environment across Texas. House Bill 1481 now prohibits students from using cell phones, tablets, and smartwatches on school property during the school day. This is a very good thing! What the Law Requires No personal devices during school hours. Schools must either ban devices entirely or provide secure storage options. Districts must establish consequences for students caught using devices during class time. The law aims to reduce distractions, help students focus, and improve classroom behavior. Many educators and parents hope this shift will allow students to fully engage with instruction, peers, and academic tasks without the constant pull of notifications and screen time. How It Connects to Academic Progress While technology has benefits, research shows that constant access to devices can negatively affect attention spans, memory, and academic performance. Without phones in class, students have a better chance of giving their undivided attention to learning — but focus alone won’t close existing academic gaps. The Bigger Picture As Texas takes bold steps to improve the learning environment, families can take a proactive step, too: ensuring their children have the academic support they need. Tutoring complements classroom learning by making sure that time spent away from phones truly translates into progress. With classrooms now distraction-free, tutors can help catch students up or make the most of this renewed focus and turn it into measurable academic growth. Book tutoring sessions with me here. Looking forward to helping your children soar! -Wendy

- Why Last-Minute Cancellations Hurt More Than You Think
Most of our sessions are booked 1:1, when a student cancels with short notice, it's often too late to offer that time slot to another family. A message from Steele’s Scholars We get it — life is busy, schedules change, and sometimes things come up. But when a tutoring session is canceled at the last minute, it has real ripple effects — not just for our small business, but for other students and families, too. As a small, high-touch tutoring service, every hour counts , and we pour our time, energy, and resources into preparing individualized learning for each student. So when a session is canceled last-minute, it’s more than a scheduling conflict — it’s a lost opportunity for someone else, and a real cost to our team. Here’s what most people don’t realize 👇 ⏰ The True Cost of a Last-Minute Cancellation We turn away other students to honor your reserved time. Most of our sessions are booked 1:1 — when a student cancels with short notice, it’s often too late to offer that time slot to another family on the waitlist. Time is already invested. We prep for each student’s lesson ahead of time — reviewing progress, tailoring materials, and setting goals. That prep work still happens, even if no one shows up. It affects other families, too. According to the American Tutoring Association , 72% of tutors say missed or late cancellations disrupt their ability to serve other clients. That’s time a student who’s behind in math or college essays could’ve used. Small businesses feel every dollar. A study by FreshBooks found that late cancellations cost service providers like tutors and coaches an average of $2,300 per year in lost revenue — often from clients who didn’t understand the impact. 📉 How It Affects Your Tutor (and Your Child’s Momentum) When cancellations happen repeatedly, they: Cause scheduling stress for everyone involved Make it harder for students to build academic momentum Lead to less consistent progress — and in some cases, students fall behind We understand that true emergencies happen. But we kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hours’ notice if a cancellation is needed. That way, we can shift our schedule and offer that slot to another student who’s eager to learn. ❤️ We’re a Small but Mighty Team — And We Truly Care At Steele’s Scholars, we’re more than just a tutoring service — we’re invested partners in your child’s education . - 3 Big Reasons to Start Summer Tutoring NOW—Before It’s Too Late!
(School Starts in Just One Month!) Summer may feel endless, but the first day of school is right around the corner. How your student spends these last few weeks can make a big difference in their confidence and academic success next year. Waiting until the school year starts can lead to stress, frustration, and playing catch-up. Here’s why NOW is the perfect time to start tutoring: 1. Stop the Summer Slide Before It Starts The “summer slide” is real. Research shows that students can lose up to two months of learning over summer break—especially in math and reading. A little consistent support during the summer keeps skills sharp, so your student returns to school ready to hit the ground running. 2. Catch Up or Get Ahead Whether your child struggled in a subject last year or simply wants to excel, summer tutoring is the ideal time to fill gaps and even get a jumpstart on next year’s curriculum. Think of it as giving them a head start instead of scrambling later. 3. Build Confidence That Lasts Tutoring isn’t just about grades—it’s about mindset. We help students feel capable and confident, giving them the motivation and independent learning skills they need to succeed long-term. Starting the year strong sets the tone for everything that follows. Don’t wait until back-to-school stress hits. - Why Summer Tutoring Might Be the Smartest Move You Make This Year
📚 Limited Enrollment: Only 6 Spots Per Camp! Summer break might mean sleeping in and sunshine—but it’s also one of the most critical times to avoid learning loss. Studies show that students can lose 20–30% of what they learned in reading and math over the summer if they’re not engaged academically (NWEA, 2020). That’s where summer enrichment comes in. 🎯 I intentionally limit enrollment to just 6 students per camp so every learner gets personalized instruction and the attention they need to thrive. Reading and creative writing about dreams and ideas! 📈 The results speak for themselves: Past students have returned to school more confident, with stronger GPAs and higher standardized test scores . Plus, small-group learning boosts collaboration skills while keeping it fun. 🎁 Multi-session discounts are available now—and if you refer a friend, you’ll receive a free one-on-one tutoring session as a thank you. 🌟 Secure your child’s success this summer at wendythetutor.com .
